QUESTION OF THE DAY : How to test a substance for insulin secretion? (4th Sept 2025)
QUESTION OF THE DAY
How to test a substance for insulin secretion?
A. Thanks for asking this question.
Many people wish to eat/drink some specific substance of their choice.
Though we have tested some substances for insulin secretion there are certain issues:
1) Not all substances are tested
2) Substances are not tested as per the quantity and quality you wish to take
3) Testing is done on 4 to 5 healthy volunteers and not on various strata such as male/female; nondiabetic/prediabetic/diabetic; age groups; overweight/obese etc hence the results may differ for individuals
4) If insulin secretes in one person we can safely conclude that it may secrete in you as well! But the converse may not be true… To say with surity that insulin will not secrete after consuming any food item there are two options:
Either test it on atleast 18 to 20 people taking into account various differences (Costly affair!) Or test insulin secretion in the person who wishes to consume that particular item (more useful and feasible!).
Procedure for testing insulin secretion:
1) Go in fasting condition to laboratory with substance you wish to test
2) Give blood sample for insulin testing…Note this time as “0” minutes.
3) Eat/drink the food item. Give second blood sample at “10” minutes (you may or may not finish that substance in 10 minutes)
4) Give third blood sample at “60” minutes.
5) Ask laboratory technician to label samples as 1st, 2nd and 3rd and put time of sample collection to avoid confusion.
6) Insist on giving reports as 1st, 2nd and 3rd samples.
Help us to generate more evidence as regards insulin secretion in response to various food items! Thanks
